Legendary New York Times street style photographer Bill Cunningham was right when he said the best fashion show is on the street. Bill passed away recently but his keen eye for storytelling+sense of style will live on.
I too love capturing everyday street style and when I spot a chic piece, I can’t help myself. It’s instinct to just approach the woman and strike up a conversation- curious about her story.
I was in Fresh Market supermarket when I spotted Mary Williams’ stunning statement necklace. Mary’s story about her necklace is beautiful. She loves to collect vintage pieces (she had me at ‘vintage’). Frustrated with the lack of shopping and cool finds where she lives, she makes her own jewelry. This beaded beauty is one of several necklaces she’s designed.
This piece came together on it’s own, through her very simple process. She spreads out her trinkets on a table and they somehow organically find each other. The three scalloped metal pieces are from an old dresser. They were designed to rest behind the drawer knobs to keep you from actually touching the dresser. I had no idea that was their purpose! The other pearls and beads were scraps she found at various estate sales. She glued the pieces, then tied the necklace together with black imported fabric. The entire piece is simply exquisite and a wonderful revival of old meeting new.
I asked Mary if she would sell her pieces. Unfortunately, she said no, which I completely understand. “It would take the fun and love away if I had the pressure of creating something for someone else,” she said.
