How-To: Copy My Dad’s Debonair Style

I come from a long lineage of fashion trend- setters. In addition to everything they taught us, my parents made sure their children understood and adapted the concept of a good appearance. It was important to give care and attention to how you looked when you left the house. No matter the occasion, school, church, dinner, events and even vacation, my parents always made sure we were well-dressed.

Each of my brothers are fashion savvy and my sister and I share the same love for style and a quality wardrobe. Nothing is different today. My Dad has a great eye for how to wear a tailored suit and how to style accessories that finish off a well-polished ensemble.

For a recent wedding, my Dad took a structured midnight black suit and styled it with hues in the blue color family. Baby blue, sky blue, navy, and grays all blend similarly well together.

What makes this look pop is his mix of prints. The striped oxford shirt was gifted by yours truly for Father’s Day. The floral abstract necktie he’s had in his wardrobe for at least two decades. It’s a smart Nothing2Wear move to recycle older pieces with something more updated, to create a trendy modern look. The fold over, rather than a knotted tie, is one of my Dad’s signatures.

To break up the blues, my Dad styled a cognac-colored leather braided belt. The other detail that I love in this look  is a little of the shirt sleeve pulled out from the blazer.

Style and attention to its detail should never stop. My Dad is nearly 70 and I love that his style influence will never cease.
